On March 14 and 15, the Old Aurora Colony Museum welcomes visitors to its first special event of the year: the 33rd Annual Antique Spinning Wheel Showcase at the Old Aurora Colony Museum. This event is produced every year by one of our wonderful community supporters, the Aurora Colony Handspinners Guild. The Antique Spinning Wheel Showcase benefits the Old Aurora Colony Museum.

There will be shearing demonstrations and rabbits in the Museum Courtyard. Hands-on carding and spinning activities will provide fun for kids of all ages. Enjoy goodies in the historic Steinbach Cabin.

This year, the Aurora Colony Handspinners are proud to present a special presentation by Jeanne Carver on Saturday, March 14 at 1 pm. Jeanne, with her husband Dan, owns and operates the historic Imperial Stock Ranch in north central Oregon.  Established in 1871 as a homestead claim, it became Oregon’s largest individually owned land and livestock, running tens of thousands of sheep.  The ranch headquarters is a National Historic District. With the loss of processing and infrastructure during the collapsing U.S. wool and textile market in the 1990’s, Dan and Jeanne began to explore new ways to sell wool, and eventually lamb and beef. Their efforts paid off, when in 2012 a representative from the fashion house Ralph Lauren asked if the Carvers could supply wool yarn for Team USA sweaters. Jeanne has been honored with the Orchid Award, given by the Portland Business Journal, for Women of Influence for 2014.  Dan and Jeanne were also recipients of the Oregon Agriculture Connection Award for 2014, for their leadership in connecting consumers to the source of their food and fiber.  Don’t miss her presentation!
