Sommersonnenwende is German for summer solstice, and we’ll gather on the longest day of the year for fellowship and a celebration of Aurora’s heritage. There will be “winebibbing” with German-style wines from Christopher Bridge Winery in Canby, plus beer, beverages, and tasty nibbles in the courtyard. Executive Director Patrick Harris will give a history talk and an update on our soon-to-be-built Preservation & Research Center, and there may even be a short walking tour of Aurora for those who wish to venture out.

Step into the year 1878 and take a guided experience through an Aurora Christmas, as seen through the eyes of the school master, his students, and other Aurora residents. It’s a time when the Colony was about to see major changes to its way of life, yet the traditional joys of the holiday season

Lanterns light your way through the grounds of the Old Aurora Colony Museum. You’ll move from building to building starting at the Ox Barn, experiencing mini-dramas as you visit the Steinbach log cabin, the tool shed, the wash house and the Kraus House. Return to the barn for hot cider and cookies as you listen to Heartstrings, with Rob and Nancy Downie playing beautiful pioneer music on hammered dulcimer and string bass. Bring the family for this visit to the past!

Tour groups start their journey every 15 minutes, so make your reservations now to ensure your tour time. Call 503-678-5754 or stop by the museum. Tickets may be reserved by credit card, or in person by cash or check as well.
