SOMMERSONNENWENDE Summer Membership Meeting

Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.

Old Aurora Colony Museum Courtyard

Call the museum at 503.678.5754

Sommersonnenwende is German for summer solstice, and we’ll gather on the longest day of the year for fellowship and a celebration of Aurora’s heritage. There will be “winebibbing” with German-style wines from Christopher Bridge Winery in Canby, plus beer, beverages, and tasty nibbles in the courtyard. Executive Director Patrick Harris will give a history talk and an update on our soon-to-be-built Preservation & Research Center, and there may even be a short walking tour of Aurora for those who wish to venture out.

Saturday July 13th, 2019

Herb Day in the Emma Wakefield Herb Garden

Noon to 3 p.m.

Old Aurora Colony Museum office:: 503-678-5754

The Willamette Valley Herb Society will be at the museum to share herb knowledge, and show their lavender, its uses and more. Come make a lavender wand, visit with the Herb Society near the washhouse, ask questions regarding herbs and their uses. There will be lavender tea to sip, and possibly lavender ice cream. Admission to this event is included in regular Museum admission.

The Emma Wakefield Herb Garden was established in July 1974 in honor of Emma Wakefield, “Canby’s Herb Lady.” For the last 45 years, Willamette Valley Herb Society has continuously maintained the garden as a way to honor Wakefield and to educate the public about the historical uses of herbs, which were important in Aurora, as founder Dr. Wilhelm Keil was an herb doctor. A German immigrant, Dr. Keil had no formal medical training but was skilled in the use of medicinal plants that cured sickness. Keil cultivated an herb garden much like the one planted and maintained by the Willamette Valley Herb Society.

In full summer bloom, the Museum’s herb garden welcomes visitors with bouquets of color and fragrance. The herb garden, a replica of a typical Aurora Colony herb garden, features culinary and medicinal herbs that would have added flavor to meals and comfort to the sick: a variety of mints, yarrow, valerian, horehound, tansy, agrimony, rosemary, thyme, chamomile and many more.
