Bring in a family heirloom or treasured quilt and discover more about its story. Quilt historian “Grandma Rachel” will look it over and share what she can about its age, construction, fabrics, dyes, and other clues to its history. She will also offer practical guidance for the long-term care and keeping of your quilt. This is a verbal assessment only.
Past sessions have uncovered details such as the use of iron mordants in fabric dyes and clues that certain red fabrics may have originally come from men’s clothing. If time allows, Rachel will also examine a few historic quilts from the Museum’s collection.
No quilt is required to attend. Even if you come just to watch, this popular session offers a fascinating look at how quilts can reveal the lives, materials, and choices of the people who made them.

Beginning with needlework lessons from her own Grandmother at the age of nine, Rachel has spent time around the quilting frame, with embroidery hoops, and at the sewing machine creating items for her family. A self-taught quilt historian and an avid reader, Grandma Rachel is frequently asked to give lectures about quilts, quilt blocks, and the role of women and their connection to fabric. Grandma Rachel spends her time researching the history of women, quilts and fabrics as often as she can.
Class Location & Check-in
All classes will be held at the Will Family Center located at 21555 Main St NE, Aurora, OR 97002. (Behind Well Rooted Salon & Boutique). If you are pre-registered, there is no need to check in at the Museum.
Directions from the Museum: Exit the Museum and turn left on 2nd Street. Cross Highway 99 at the crosswalk and turn left on Main Street. Follow sidewalk along the left side of Well Rooted to the entrance of the Will Family Center. About a 3-minute walk (2½ blocks) from the Museum.
Parking: Please park along 2nd St. NE, north of the Will Family Center, and leave Main Street parking available for customers of nearby businesses.
Refund Policy
Tickets are nonrefundable. If a class is canceled by the Museum due to low enrollment, presenter cancellation, weather, or other circumstances, ticket holders will receive a full refund.
